Full-Mouth Scaling and Polishing for Generalized Gingivitis and Localized Calculus
Introduction
The patient presented for routine dental care with a chief complaint of bleeding gums and visible calculus deposits. Clinical examination confirmed gingivitis with associated inflammation and localized calculus accumulation, particularly in the mandibular anterior and maxillary posterior regions.
Clinical Procedure
The procedure involved Full-Mouth Scaling and Root Planing (SRP), though primarily focused on supragingival and shallow subgingival scaling. Ultrasonic scalers were used to efficiently remove the gross calculus deposits, followed by hand instruments (curettes) for fine scaling and root planing in specific localized areas.
Following calculus removal, the teeth were thoroughly polished using prophylaxis paste and a rubber cup to remove extrinsic stain and smooth the tooth surfaces, making them less retentive for plaque. The focus was on achieving clean, smooth tooth surfaces and a significant reduction in gingival inflammation.
Outcome
Immediate post-treatment shows the complete removal of calculus and stain. There was a noticeable improvement in gingival color and contour due to the elimination of local irritants. The patient was highly satisfied with the aesthetic improvement and reported relief from minor gingival discomfort. The patient was placed on a 3-month recall for re-evaluation of periodontal health and maintenance.
